the timeless phrase: “don’t judge a book by its cover”
you’ve probably said it. or maybe your mother would say it to you when you were a child with a sing-songy tone.
i read a stat recently:
80% of people who are initially interested by a book is because of the cover itself.
and 60% of the people who actually purchase a book will do so based on the cover design (and that was even after they read the back cover and synopsis).
just to clarify, i’m talking about the literal meaning of ‘judging a book by its cover’ here, and not the analogy of judging someone based on their looks and appearance.
(don’t do that. it’s not nice.)
and yet, another commonplace saying exists:
”a picture contains a thousand words”.
so, which is it?
enter re: COVER.
this is a publication dedicated to book covers and design.
if you’re reading this, you’re probably an author of sorts.
maybe you’ve written a book. maybe you blog.
maybe you secretly want to write a book, but have been made to feel like you can’t do it. (well, stick around- i’m going to prove to you that you can, and SHOULD).
a few things that i would like to explore with this page:
*invite you into the creative process of what designing a book cover looks like.
*share some of the illustrations that i’m working on or have in the pipeline to get you excited about getting your own book out there.
*review some of the greatest book covers i’ve come across and why they matter.
maybe you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover…
but, if you’re going to, you might as well make sure yours is awesome,
right?
(and i’m here to help you out with that part too).
